MODO and Product Package Design

Tomasz Lechociński is a 3D artist specializing in product & package design. He uses MODO to visualize retail packaging and marketing items, including product stands, wobblers, and shelf stoppers, and has worked with such clients as 3M and Nestlé.

“MODO let me do things that previously were not possible with traditional 2D programs. It opened up a whole new world to me, and thanks to MODO’s great and useful interface, my work became fun.”

“The most important part of MODO in creating packaging is the power of the render preview window,” he notes. “Immediate live changes that reflect material or artwork changes are just great.”

“I use morph maps to store different states of the object. I find that the best results in folding boxes can be achieved by using Skeleton Tool . . .”

MODO: Packaging Visualization

MODO has been favored by CG artists for product & packaging visualization. Gene Dupont has over 20 years of experience with CG, and has used MODO since 2007, (around the release of modo 203).

“Since then, I’ve used MODO almost exclusively for creating 3D product illustrations,” he says.

I keep up-to-date with what other 3D software is capable of, but MODO is the best software for what I do: creating high quality product and packaging images.

Why Designers Love MODO

MODO has a rich history in the product design and mechanical design markets. For years it has been a mainstay for artists and designers, for its gorgeous and intuitive render workflow and its ability to handle CAD files with ease.

Hollywood set designer Scott Schneider uses MODO with Rhino for his workflow.
“[MODO gives me] the ability to rapidly amass ideas and change them on the fly while still maintaining accuracy” before building the physical sets.”

And it played a fundamental role in several major design projects.
“. . . The ease of modeling and rapid replication of elements gave me the ability to generate ideas quickly but accurately, thus speeding up the design process. The fact that I could take my MODO model into a CAD package like Rhino, convert it to NURBS, and begin generating 2D drawings without any retooling cut my modeling time in half.

Have questions about MODO? Let us know, we’re always happy to help.
