New Feature in Maya 2013: Alembic Caching

Maya 2013 now supports Alembic caching. Alembic is an interchange format developed by Lucasfilm and Sony Pictures Imageworks to allow for the caching and transfer of massive datasets. It is a universal, non-software specific format.

How does this help you?
You can now transfer massive datasets easily between departments, due to the drastic reduction in cache sizes that Alembic allows. (Lucasfilm’s test with Transformers characters showed cache reductions up to 98%.)

For a brief overview of Alembic in Maya, see this video. Alembic starts at time 8:19.
